Spain loses 1,204 self-employed workers in 2022 and marks the worst record in a decade

The annual report on self-employed data by communities and provinces, published this Saturday by ATA, indicates that in Spain 1,204 self-employed workers were lost last year, according to information provided by Social Security, which is “the worst data for 2012 and the first that the self-employed have lost in the last decade in net terms of affiliation on the last day”, as pointed out by Lorenzo Amor, president of the entity.

Compared to these five autonomous communities, the negative “ranking” is led by La Rioja, with a decrease of 1.9%, followed by Castilla y León, which fell from the barrier of 190,000 autonomous to 187,395 autonomous, falling by 1.5 %, and Galicia and Asturias, which have fallen by 1.4%.

By provinces, both Castilla y León and Galicia and Aragón register a loss of autonomy in all their provinces, among which Lugo (-2.3%), Palencia and Teruel (-2.2%), León (-2.1%) stand out. %) and Ourense (-2.0%).

The Valencian Community registers an uneven behavior among its provinces, since Alicante is the fifth in Spain with the highest growth (0.9%), while Valencia closes the year positively, but below the regional average (0.5% ) and Castellón has lost self-employed affiliation in the last year (-0.1%).

By sectors, the worst figures are marked by three “fundamentals”, as ATA points out, such as commerce, hospitality and industry, with a “strong” loss of self-employed workers in the year, in what Lorenzo Amor describes as a “debacle”.

The data reflects a 2.6% drop in commerce (-19,699 self-employed workers), financial activities have lost 1.5% of the self-employed workers in this activity in one year, industry 1.3%, hospitality and agriculture the 1.1% and the transport sector 0.5%, which means 1,102 fewer carriers in one year.

On the contrary, artistic and entertainment activities have grown by 4.5% in 2022 and real estate activities (4.2%), information and communication (3.8%) and health activities (3, 7%).

Regarding gender, the report highlights that it is the autonomous regions that have the greatest entrepreneurial impulse in Spain, since in 2022 they have requested 7,816 affiliates (0.6%) while men have decreased by 9,022 (0.4% ).
