Solidarity wills have increased their contribution to non-profit entities of the ‘HazTestamentoSolidario.org’ platform by 21% in 2022 compared to the previous year. An amount that was marketed at 40,985,380 million. In the last five years, the entities have been able to convert the 136 million euros from 1,565 solidarity wills into humanitarian and environmental projects.
In Spain, more than 600,000 wills open before a notary are signed each year and the number of people who decided to allocate part or all of their assets to charitable causes is increasing. In 2022, there was an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. According to a study by ‘Haztestamentosolidario.org’, only in 2022, non-profit entities received donations from 325 people, representing a total of 41 million euros. That year the highest amount registered so far has been reached through a solidarity will (4 million euros) in Madrid.
With this upward trend, the average amount deposited also increases according to the data provided, being 126,108.86 euros, a net growth of 58% compared to 2021, where the amount was 79,904 euros. Making a joint will does not imply having a large estate or leaving out legitimate heirs; In addition, solidarity entities do not pay inheritance taxes on inheritances and legacies, everything they receive is fully transformed into projects with an impact.
Catalonia and Madrid in the lead
The communities where the most solidarity wills were made in 2022 were Catalonia (57), Madrid (50), the Valencian Community (30), Castilla y León (29), Andalusia (28) and the Basque Country (27). By provinces, Barcelona is in first place, followed by Madrid, Navarra, Vizcaya, Malaga, Seville and Valencia.
Regarding the value of the donations collected, the Community of Madrid is in first place with 12,428,638 euros, followed by Catalonia (5,035,739 euros), the Basque Country (4,785,290 euros), Castilla y León (3,759,841 euros), Aragon (2,961,305 euros), the Valencian Community (1,767,613 euros), Andalusia (1,547,667 euros) and Navarra (1,084,319 euros). Castilla-La Mancha is the autonomous community that has received the most amount with only two solidarity wills entered (863,976 euros).
Women sign more solidarity wills
The profile of testators has been equilibrating in recent years between men and women, although women have historically collaborated the most in their wills (in this sense, in 2022, 58% of the people who made a joint will are women).
Marital status is a variant that is also reflected in the study by ‘Haztestamentosolidario.org’, since more and more married people are joining (in 2022, 47% of the people who made a solidary will were single, 32% married , 11% divorced and 10% widows). Finally, the study highlights a clear trend towards rejuvenation in the age at which these types of wills are made: from the age of 60, compared to 80 years ago.
