Since the General Telecommunications Law approved in 2022 excluded booths from universal service, we have seen how many companies and municipalities They have decided to transform them into something more modern and useful for today’s society.
The Urban Intelligence company has already installed several Cabinpaq in Madrid and Seville. These are cabins designed and manufactured in Valencia that allow you to enjoy free Wi-Fi connection on the street, recharge your cell phone, call emergencies, consult tourist and environmental information and even pick up orders at any time.
Cabins are not a thing of the past
After several extensions, on January 1, 2022, Telefónica ceased to be the operator in charge of “providing the telephone payment service with coins or cards through terminals located on public roads”, that is, of the telephone booths. That, added to his exclusion from universal service, seemed to have doomed the cabins to his disappearance.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The cabins have not disappeared, but have been transformed. New York, for example, replaced them by WiFi connection pointsand London, for its part, was transforming them at mobile charging stations.
Spain is no stranger to this trend and a couple of years ago we saw how the Malaga startup iUrban was converting telephone booths into tourist information points baptized as “neocabins”. Now we have a new example of this trend with the Urban Intelligence company and its Cabinpaq.
The idea of this company is replace old cabins telephone calls through modern multifunctional centers that will allow citizens, among other things, to enjoy free WiFi connection on the street, recharge their cell phones, call emergencies and even pick up orders at any time.
Charger, WiFi point, emergency phone… And messaging center
According to its creators, this “21st century booth” aims to guarantee universal access to 112 emergency services and the Internet thanks to the free use 5G WiFi network. In addition, it has implemented an induction charger for mobile phones and emergency phones.
It also has a interactive touch display where you can consult weather information, air quality data, an interactive map and the tourist and cultural offer of the city.
It is planned to incorporate IoT sensors for measuring traffic, pollen, UV radiation and noise pollution.
As if that were not enough, it has lockers enabled for receiving and sending packages through QR codes (very useful for promoting local commerce). The company’s idea is to offer some CabinPaq services for free, but others will be paid for by third parties.
And where can we see these CabinPaq cabins? In two Sevillian municipalities: last September, the installation of 15 cabins began in Mairena del Aljarafe (Seville) and the Dos Hermanas City Council has already obtained CNMC approval to place another 48. Recently, two CabinPaq have also been installed in Madrid, on the Camino de Perales and on the Paseo de la Chopera.
