Ghana sacks Atsu, national team player who died in Turkey

Farewell ceremony in Accra for Turkish national team and Hatayspor footballer Christian Atsu, who died as a result of the devastating earthquake in Turkey

The farewell ceremony took place at the Accra State Palace, with the visit of the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo. Other personalities and former teammates of the footballer also attended.

Atsu’s funeral will take place in his hometown of Ada, Ghana. 31-year-old Atsu during his career played for the Portuguese “Porto” and “Rio Ave”, the English “Chelsea”, “Everton”, “Bournemouth” and “Newcastle”, the Dutch “Vitesse”, the Spanish “Malaga “, the Saudi Al-Raed. As part of the Ghana national team, he played 60 games in which he scored 10 goals.

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey on February 6. A few hours later, another push followed at a force of 7.6 points. Atsu’s body was recovered from the rubble on February 18. According to the latest data, the death toll in Turkey has exceeded 49,000.
